Vintage Art Deco 1920s-1940s Japanese Damascene Shakudo Panel Link Necklace
Circa 1920s-1940s. Made in Japan.
Back of largest/center panel is stamped with a Japanese character.
Appears to be mixed metal or possibly brass.
Shakudo is one of the oldest of metal arts in Japan going back over 1,000 years. It is sometimes called the Japanese version of Damascene. Shakudo was used as ornamentation on Japanese samurai swords until the Meiji period when the samurai were abolished. At that point the skilled sword makers applied their skill to other items including jewelry.
Necklace measures approximately 17.25 inches long by 0.75 wide (at widest point).
Weighs approximately 29.05 grams.
